Using Digital Light Processing (DLP) technology, the Mitsubishi WD-73638 3D-Ready DLP HDTV is able to deliver high-resolution images with vibrant colors on a huge 73-inch display panel. The TV features Plush 1080p technology which displays full HD 1920 x 1080p resolution pictures and at the same time optimizes the display of 720p or 1080i HD video content.

The WD-73638 is more than just a large screen displaying high-definition images.  It displays them in 3D, that is, if the video signal received is from a Blu-ray Disc player playing 3D content or a 3D broadcast.  You will, however, need a pair of active 3D glasses to immerse yourself in the action on your TV screen.  Employing Alternate Frame Sequencing technique, the TV and active glasses work together in sync to display alternating images to your left and right eyes. This transforms the two 2D images directed at each eye into a single 3D figure.

The color spectrum from which the different shades and hues are taken to give life and realism to the images on your screen is broadened by the x.v. Color and Deep Color features of the TV. Indeed, the spectrum is so wide that it is said that it can display up to a billion colors. Transition between colors is also smoothed by Deep Color that eliminates color banding. Also incorporated is a 6-color processor that renders colors more vivid and more intense thus producing whiter whites.

Designed with four video modes, the Mitsubishi WQD-73638 3D-Ready DLP HDTV can be adjusted for normal viewing of live TV broadcasts and movies in Natural Mode, display of graphic images common in video games in Gaming Mode, and concerts and matinees in Bright and Brilliant Modes.

For connectivity, the WD-73638 has several types of inputs, namely, three HDMI, two component video, two A/V composite, one DVA/PC audio, and one USB 2.0. For output, it has one for digital audio, and the 3D glasses emitter.

3D Technology Checklist

This product is 3D-related. To help you get a great 3D experience, use our checklist below to ensure that you have everything you need. If you have any questions or want to learn more about 3D, we invite you to visit 3D 101--our center for everything 3D. To get started with 3D, please ensure that you have:

A Display

The first--and most important--item you'll need is a 3D-ready display--whether it be a 3D HDTV, 3D projector, or 3D computer monitor. These displays usually have a higher processing power than older models as they need to display one image for each eye to create a 3D effect.

A Source

While your display is ready for 3D playback, you still need a device to read 3D content (i.e., a movie or a show). This source can be a cable box with a subscription to a 3D channel, a 3D Blu-ray Disc player, or a PlayStation 3.

Content

In order to watch 3D, you will need to get some 3D content. This 3D content will come from the source mentioned above in the form of a 3D program, movie, or game. Please ensure that your 3D movies are in the Blu-ray 3D format, as this new format will provide the best 3D experience.

3D Glasses

All 3D HDTVs on the market require Active Shutter glasses to create the 3D effect. You will need to buy one pair of glasses for each viewer. Also make sure that the Active Shutter glasses you buy are compatible with your display--for example, buy the glasses from the same brand as your 3D HDTV.

HDMI Cable

To connect your source (such as a 3D Blu-ray Disc player) to your display, you'll need a hgh-speed HDMI cable. Cables with this designation--with bandwidth speeds up to 10.2 Gbps (gigabits per second)--will be able to carry the 3D signal without any loss of quality.
If you want to get more information about 3D, shop our 3D products, watch videos, or interact with other customers, visit 3D 101, our customer center about everything 3D.

Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?
HDTV Size chart With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience.

If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.

  • Minimum size = Viewing distance/3
  • Maximum size=Viewing distance/1.5

5 Great 3D TV Huge Picture Inexpensive Price
By
Colin J. Mooney (Modesto, CA)
I am an a/v nut. My other TV is a 10 foot projector. I love this TV. The picture looks fantastic. It makes my 60" phillips I had look terrible. I have not purchased the converter box for the 3d but it's coming soon. The audio is good. The remote is not great but I use dish network's remote anyways.

There are some MINOR critiques. I can say is it takes over ten seconds to start up every time you turn it on, for the projector inside it to light up the bulb. You get used to it, and it is not a big issue. The other thing is that the screen (which is very good at not casting reflections with it's matte finish) is flat in the center but has a slight crown in the corners, which is visible if you're looking for the matte reflection (as it's EXTREMELY well hidden, and only seen when you look for screen's reflection).

Where else are you going to find 73" of screen at this price? And it's incredible looking as well.

5 3D ready yes
by Michael J. Shoop if you buy the Panasonic DMP-BDT100 3D/2D Blu-Ray DVD Player, the Optoma BG-ZD101 DLP Link 3D Glasses with 3 Interchangeable Nose Pieces (Red) their is no need for the Mitsubishi converter kit. the Panasonic DMP-BDT100 does 3D checkerboard format right out of the box and the Optoma BG-ZD101 DLP Link 3D Glasses do not need an emitter to work. TV works great and the 3D is excellent. FYI you can use the PS3 if you use the Mitsubishi converter kit. However it is a cheaper option to buy the Panasonic DMP-BDT100 and the Optoma BG-ZD101 DLP Link 3D Glasses.

5  Mitsubishi WD-73638 73-Inch 1080p 3D-Ready DLP HDTV
by joseph jreige (WORCESTER, MA, US)
awsome T.V for the price, can't go wrong. I watch sports and on this T.V its amazing. also the 3D imaging is the best, the kids love it.

5 good value
by mr_frosty
I have been casually shopping lcd's and plasmas but went with DLP because the pictures on the new flatscreens these days have outpaced Hollywood and it is hard for me to get into a movie when all I can see are make up lines and blemishes on the actors, (Bruce Willis looks OLD on an lcd! kinda depressing cuz that means I'm getting old too) and all the obviously fake sets. Even the CGI looks hokey IMO. Having said that the mits has a BEAUTIFUL picture. Crystal clear and crisp even in daylight. With the 73' watching sports it's like the play starts in your living room and they score in your dining room----AWESOME! At $1199 by far the best bang for the buck of anything out there right now. The speakers suck, suck, suck so you will want to hook it up to an amp. 3d ready means you have a choice of buying a panasonic 3d bdp which decodes to their checkerboard signal or you pony up some bucks to mitsubishi for the adapter. The 7 and 8 series mits come with a 3d firmware update so the mits adapter is hopefully coming down in price for us cheapskate 638 buyers. Mine was built 9/2010 and did NOT come with the cheesy looking grey speakers. Not as much screen control as the higher end models but this was a non issue as the presets all look fantastic. Bottom line this is the perfect pricepoint monitor for home theater or sports.

5 Great TV
by J. S Thomas "Jethro" (Arlington, Texas USA)
I received this 73' TV. Absolutely love it. Sharpest picture I ever had. I can actually see the puck and follow it during the hockey game. Feels like I'm at the game. If there is a better picture out there let me know, and I'll buy it!

5 Big Screenby John B. MurphyVery nice clear picture on a huge screen. Great price for a TV this size. The picture is not quite as bright or dynamic as my 3 year old Samsung 50" plasma but it is still a very good picture. You also can hear a slight humming coming from the TV if you listen closely. That is not a problem for me since I usually have my stereo hooked up but if you try and hear the humming you will.

I've had this tv for a month and really like it But last night while watching Avatar it got a black horizontal line about 1" wide with a white dot in the center it is there in all modes. any one know what caused it and how to get rid of it. I have unpluged it removed and reinserted the lamp. is it a faulty lamp?
